we used to play outside when we were young and full of life and full of love
It's been two years since the shikon no tama was wished away from existence. Two years since its malice stopped drawing in demons, since their constant struggle for power started to wane. What had been a relief in the beginning has since worn down to restlessness for InuYasha, who no longer has a stronger motivation to fuel his days than keeping villages safe from minor threats. It'll only be a matter of time, he tells himself, until another large threat will rise again, with demons putting aside their differences in the interest of pooling strength and grabbing power. It'll only be a matter of time before the world truly needs him again, a mantle that he's somehow taken from his late father without ever being told to.
But sometimes time itself feels like an insurmountable barrier, and InuYasha just doesn't care to think too much about it.
Inevitably, he still does. It's that stupid well more than anything that keeps InuYasha clinging to the past, a physical reminder of how he'd once been able to travel through time for the sake of seeing her. Kagome. Even after two years, it still carries the barest of her scent, lingering in the dirt. And even though it's been nothing more than a well for those two years, InuYasha finds himself visiting every third day, leaping to the bottom to feel closer to her. He tells himself that it's just because the scent of her is stronger at the bottom, but every time he makes the leap down, he can feel a skip in his chest. A traitorous vein of hope.
Today, he notices something different halfway down to the bottom. Ears immediately perking and eyes narrowing in suspicion, InuYasha lands softly on the dirt at the bottom of the well, sniffing the air, significantly changed. There's no trace of Kagome on the wind, but the acrid taste reminds him strongly of her world and the speedy vehicles he'd chased after on his few visits. Lowering his weight briefly, InuYasha jumps easily out of the well, perching on the wooden frame as he stares out into the distance, spotting towering buildings ahead and crowds of people milling through the streets.
This isn't where he wanted to end up, but at least it's something new. Dropping to all fours, InuYasha starts to bound for the city, nose tickled by all of the contrasting scents, and he does his best not to sneeze too much as he approaches the roads.
"What the fuck is going on here?" he asks himself, a low growl already settling into his throat.

Rin frowns slightly. He wonders if InuYasha will even speak to him again, after this. He hopes that he does. More importantly, he wonders if the guy will even want to stay in an apartment. He seems a little wary. Not really paranoid, but, you know, the kind of guy who threatens to pull katana on people who know his name. Lifting a hand, he scrubs at his forehead with it, before smoothing his bangs back.
"I can take you to my apartment and let you see what I'm talking about. I've got food there, I can make you some to get you started. Do you wear shoes?" he wonders, staring pointedly at a pair of bare feet on the damp, cold cement.
"You're not some unnecessarily huge guy, so I think mine would fit."

The only reason he can think of for having a place is for Kagome to be comfortable, and without her here, he just can't see the point. It's a hassle. He reaches out for Rin's hand instead, holding it out in front of him before placing the envelope firmly in it.
"You can have my apartment. And my money. I don't need any of it; I can hunt and I've slept outdoors all my life anyway," he says resolutely, still squinting and staring around at all the places around him. He spots a grocery store, giving it a thoughtful look. Ramen would be nice. Then again, buying ramen regularly for himself means keeping track of money.
Not worth it.
"And I don't wear shoes," he adds. "Ruins my balance and my feet are stronger than any human-made shoes, anyway."

Rin spent fourteen years of his life as a human. It puts him in the right position to guard that sort of thing for InuYasha.
"I'll keep it for you," he says, pointedly. He doesn't want to just take InuYasha's stuff like some kind of leech who showed up at an opportune time. "All I'm saying is, tonight, I'll save you the trouble of hunting. I'll make you some dinner. I'll answer whatever questions I can. I'm not very smart, but I've been here for a while. And anyway, I want to talk to you. Like I said, I've never met another person sitting in the middle before. Just humans and just demons."

His eyes still trail back to the store they pass, and when the automatic doors slide open for another customer, InuYasha takes a stronger whiff. For the most part, the foods of the future aren't quite as aromatic, but the spices are always an exception. They tickle his nose pleasantly, and InuYasha does his best to school his expression into some semblance of order.
"But if you want to make dinner and talk... do you know how to make instant ramen?" InuYasha asks, tucking his hands back into his sleeves to hide them from the cold.

Stoic guys like this, he thinks, need taking care of of their own, just like Yukio.
"Instant?" he says, sounding almost offended. "Soup is my specialty, especially rich pork stock. I think I can make you the real deal if you're willing to wait for me to throw it together. I'll make something for you to take with you when you go, too. When it's cold like this, you have to have food in your stomach for energy."

Reminds him a bit of Shippou, in fact. InuYasha can only wonder at how he's managed to survive until now. Maybe he has a protective relative, too, just like Jinenji.
"I knew another hanyou once," InuYasha says, ears twitching, listening around them for anything out of the ordinary. "He enjoyed gardening. I guess your thing is cooking."
no subject
"My brother says it's my only useful skill. I don't know anything about gardening, but I like to cook. It's something you can do for people to show them you're got them on your mind if you're the kind of person who has trouble using word to do it." Which would be Rin. He's gotten leagues better than he was just a year ago, and he recognizes that. "And if you do it well, people want to eat it in the first place."
no subject
InuYasha assumes Rin will tug on his sleeve again if he starts walking them in the wrong direction.
"I never had time for cooking. And I don't know anyone who's very good at it, except..." InuYasha's voice trails off with a frown. Kagome's mother had been good, but the odds of him ever seeing her again are slim to none. "I knew someone, but it's someone I haven't seen in years."
Brow knitting further, InuYasha glances back at Rin. "Say, how often do people arrive here? Can people summon others here?"
